Before & After: New Floors, Windows, and Trim in a San Clemente Bedroom
What replacing a painted plywood floor with wide-plank oak — plus new windows, trim, and French doors — did for one San Clemente bedroom. Real before and after photos.

Not every project is a gut remodel. Sometimes a room just needs the fundamentals done right: the floor, the windows, and the trim. This San Clemente bedroom is a good example of how far those three things go, with real before and after photos below.
Where it started
The before photo tells the story: a plywood subfloor painted in a diamond checkerboard to buy time, dated windows, and trim that had seen a few decades. Livable, but the room was never going to feel finished no matter what furniture went into it.
What we changed
- Wide-plank oak flooring, laid wall to wall. No paint pretending to be a floor.
- New windows with clean white trim, so the light comes in through something worth looking at.
- Fresh baseboards and casing throughout — the detail most people can't name but everyone notices.
Why floors and windows first
When homeowners ask where to start on an older room, our answer is usually the surfaces you touch and look through every day. Flooring sets the tone for everything above it, and windows change both how a room looks and how it holds temperature. Paint and furniture are easy to change later; floors and windows are the bones of how a room feels.
The other reason: doing them together is cheaper and cleaner than doing them a year apart. Trim work ties both together — new floors meet new baseboards, new windows meet new casing — and one crew handling it in one pass means the joints and reveals actually line up.
The result
Same room, same footprint, no walls moved. Scroll the photos and judge for yourself.
